How do I contribute stock to Daffy?

Written by Support

You can make irrevocable contributions of nearly all publicly traded stocks, ETFs, and mutual funds to your Daffy fund. Your brokerage sends the shares to Daffy through a charitable DTC transfer.

How does a stock contribution work?

  1. Check your brokerage. Find your brokerage in the table below. If it's not listed, ask your brokerage if it supports charitable stock transfers via DTC.

  2. Create a stock intent. In Daffy or the iOS app, go to Add Funds > Stocks, ETFs & Mutual Funds. A stock intent tells Daffy which shares to expect so they're credited to your fund.

  3. Send the shares. Follow your brokerage's instructions below.

Create your stock intent before your brokerage sends the shares. Without one, Daffy can't match the transfer to your fund right away.

Which instructions should I follow?

Each brokerage handles charitable transfers differently. Find yours below.

Brokerage

How the transfer is sent

Instructions

Schwab

Daffy submits it for you with your e-signature, or you submit a form to Schwab yourself

E*TRADE

Daffy submits it for you with your e-signature, or you submit a form online to E*TRADE yourself

Fidelity

You submit it using Daffy's pre-filled paper form

Merrill

You submit it using Daffy's pre-filled paper form

J.P. Morgan

You submit it using Daffy's pre-filled paper form

Vanguard

You submit it online at Vanguard using Daffy's receiving details

Betterment

You contribute from Betterment's Transfers page

Any other brokerage

You ask your brokerage for a charitable DTC transfer and use Daffy's receiving details

If Daffy submits the transfer for you (Schwab or E*TRADE only), don't also start it at your brokerage. Doing both can send your shares twice.

What do I need before I start?

  • The ticker and number of shares you're contributing

  • The cost basis of those shares. Record it now because most brokerages don't keep it after the shares leave your account, and Daffy does not have access to it.

  • Your choice of immediate or custom liquidation (What happens to my shares after I transfer them to Daffy?)

How long does a stock transfer take?

Timing depends on your brokerage. Daffy has seen shares arrive in 1-2 business days and in 2+ weeks. When the shares arrive and match your stock intent, Daffy notifies you and attributes the shares to your fund. See When will my stock contribution appear in my Daffy account?

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Daffy pull shares from my brokerage account?

No. Daffy can't request or pull shares from your account. For Schwab and E*TRADE, Daffy can submit your signed transfer form for you. For every other brokerage, you start the transfer yourself.

Can I transfer stock to Daffy through ACATS?

No. Daffy accepts charitable DTC transfers, not ACATS account transfers. Ask your brokerage for a charitable or gift transfer via DTC. See Does Daffy accept stock transfers through ACATS?

Can I contribute shares of a private company?

Shares of privately held companies go through a separate process. See the Private Stock Donation Program.
